How do Rising Memory Prices Affect ITAD Asset Valuation?
Rising memory prices can increase the recovery value of DRAM, NAND and storage components independently of the devices containing them. For ITAD providers, component-level valuation can reveal when intact resale, refurbishment or parts harvesting offers the strongest recovery opportunity.
For years, technology asset valuation has started with a familiar question: What is the device worth?
It is a reasonable place to begin. But in today’s memory market, it is no longer a reliable place to stop.
AI infrastructure demand is changing how memory capacity is allocated and how quickly pricing can move. TrendForce projected conventional DRAM contract prices to rise another 13% to 18% quarter over quarter in the third quarter of 2026, with NAND Flash contract prices expected to increase 10% to 15%. The same market update pointed to AI server demand and large-scale data center deployments as major forces behind those increases.
For IT asset disposition providers, that is more than a procurement story. It is a signal that the economics inside a technology asset may be changing independently of the asset itself.
And that changes the valuation question.
Device-Level Averages Can Hide the Real Opportunity
Let’s dive in!
A server, workstation, laptop or storage system is not one economic unit. It is a collection of components, each with its own demand curve, supply constraints, condition variables and resale channels.
The complete device may be following a familiar depreciation pattern while one or more components inside it are moving in a different direction.
Consider what can happen when memory prices rise:
- A server model may appear to be depreciating while its installed memory retains more value than expected.
- Two visually identical systems may have dramatically different recovery potential because of their memory configurations.
- A device that looks marginal as an intact resale candidate may become more attractive as a component-harvesting opportunity.
- Historical averages for the full device may fail to reflect a recent change in the economics of DRAM, NAND or enterprise storage.
When valuation stops at the model number, these differences can disappear inside an average.
That is the problem. An average can make processing easier while making the decision less accurate.
The Most Important Number May Be Hiding Inside the Device
ITAD operators already know that configuration matters. The challenge is applying that knowledge consistently across high volumes of assets while the market continues to move.
A technician or pricing specialist may recognize a valuable configuration when it appears. But relying on individual experience creates limits:
- The insight may not be applied consistently across facilities or teams.
- Manual research may take longer than the decision window allows.
- Component pricing may change before static rules or reference tables are updated.
- Valuable parts may be missed when intake data is incomplete or normalized only at the device level.
This is where component intelligence becomes operationally important.
Component intelligence is not simply a more detailed asset record. It is the ability to identify what is inside an asset, understand the economic contribution of those components and use that information to support a better disposition decision.
The goal is not to disassemble everything. The goal is to know when disassembly deserves consideration.
Rising Component Costs Change More Than Resale Pricing
When an individual component becomes more valuable, the impact travels through the entire recovery workflow.
It can influence:
Grading and Valuation
A configuration with higher-value memory or storage should not be valued like the lowest common denominator for that device family.
Refurbishment
The economics of repairing or upgrading an asset can improve when the finished configuration has stronger market demand.
Parts Harvesting
Components may produce a better combined recovery outcome than an intact sale, particularly when the complete device has limited demand or high repair costs.
Inventory Timing
A current market signal may justify prioritizing certain components or asset classes for faster processing. It may also change how teams evaluate short holding periods, although no pricing signal should be treated as a guaranteed future value.
Customer Reporting
More precise valuation can help ITADs explain why similar-looking assets produced different recovery outcomes.
These are not isolated pricing decisions. They affect routing, labor, processing priority, channel selection and customer returns.
Static Rules Struggle in a Market That Does Not Move as One
Many disposition workflows still depend on fixed assumptions:
- This model is resold intact.
- That age class is harvested.
- This configuration is recycled.
- Anything below a set device value follows the same path.
Static rules have a purpose. They create speed and consistency. But they become dangerous when they are mistaken for current intelligence.
The memory market is showing why. Components do not always depreciate at the same rate as the devices containing them. They do not all respond to the same supply constraints. They do not all serve the same buyers.
When those economics diverge, yesterday’s correct rule can become today’s missed opportunity.
See the Value Inside Every Asset
G2RL approaches valuation at both the asset and component levels. The purpose is to help ITAD teams understand not only what a device may be worth, but what is creating that value and which recovery paths deserve consideration.
That intelligence can support a more informed choice among intact resale, refurbishment, component harvesting, wholesale or recycling. It gives experienced operators better information to apply across more assets without forcing every decision into the same static workflow.
The memory market will continue to move. Some changes will be broad. Others will be concentrated in a specific generation, configuration or component category.
ITADs that only watch the device may miss the message.
The smarter approach is to look inside the asset, understand the economics and decide from there.
